Executive Summary :

The present study aims to determine the effective hydraulic properties of macropores at a grid scale of remote sensing observation by developing 1-D inverse modeling and by identification of temporal scale of surface soil moisture. It further deals with the effect of uncertainty in surface soils moisture in the estimation of hydraulic properties of macropores. Numerical experiments will be performed by using surface soil moisture data at field-scale under various hydrological conditions. The developed numerical model will be validated againts field measurement and utilized to estimate hydraulic properties of macropores at grid scale remote sensing observations. The estimates of macropores flow properties will improve flood forecasting, water and pesticide usage efficiency and give an understanding of water and contaminant transport in the subsurface. The results would be incorporated in hydrological, climatic and aggricultural models to improve their prediction capability of water movement.
