Executive Summary :

The project aims to design a computer-based intervention model to enhance numerical cognition in primary school students. Mathematics is crucial in everyday life, as it helps children learn numbers, patterns, shapes, and basic arithmetic operations. However, many students struggle with basic mathematics, leading to low academic achievement and increased dropout rates. The project proposes using multimedia and virtual reality-based computer games to address this issue. The games are based on findings in cognitive science, specifically numerical cognition and symbolic mathematics. The project will use VR technology to provide interactive training, develop a neural model to determine the field-of-view (FOV) of each learner, and analyze brain signals captured during training sessions. The project will also analyze the relationship between cognitive activities and post-game performance in formal symbolic mathematics in Grade I. The project aims to address research questions about the effectiveness of non-symbolic mathematics interventions in primary school education.

Competency in early mathematics is crucial for later academic achievement. Learning difficulties in formal mathematics, particularly for children from poor socio-economic backgrounds, can be addressed through research in numerical cognition and multimedia technology. The project aims to design and develop VR-based interventions, computer-based games, neural models, and passive monitoring tools for primary school children.
